Occupy Wall Street Protesters Are Despised By Rep. Peter King - They Remind Him Of The 1960's

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) was a recent guest on conservative host Laura Ingraham’s radio show, where they discussed a few items of mutual interest, including the Occupy Wall Street movement (also known as the 99% movement). There was a statement made by Rep. King, which has raised a few eyebrows, along with providing a possible peek into the recent ideology of the Republican Party, circa 2009. Here is part of King’s statement, which refers to the demonstrations:

This raises a couple of interesting questions. Is Rep. King speaking for himself, or is this the mindset of Republican leadership? Does this go further than simply getting President Obama out of office by any means necessary? Let’s take a look at some of the events of the 1960’s where Rep. King mentioned “the left wing took to the streets”, and we will be able to draw a conclusion:
1) February 1960 - Greensboro, North Carolina. Four African American students begin a sit-in at a lunch counter at a Woolworths in the city. The counter was segregated; African Americans were not served there, only whites. Not exactly takin’ it to the streets, but this is a starting point.
RESULT: The sit ins resulted in the integration of parks, theaters, libraries, and many other public places. Was the result a reshaping of policy? You betcha.
2) May 1961 - The famed Freedom Rides commence, where black and white students tested the new interstate laws banning racial discrimination in railroad and bus stations, especially in the South.
RESULT: The “freedom riders” are met with threats, which then spill over into violence, where many of the riders were beaten badly by whites who sought to stop the actions.
3) October 1962 – James Meredith becomes the first African American admitted to the University of Mississippi.
RESULT: Angry whites “took it to the streets” resulting in President Kennedy sending 5,000 U.S. Army troops to Mississippi to restore order. As a result, African Americans began to be admitted to institutions of higher learning throughout the South. Yes, another radical lefty policy change.
4) May 1963 – While African Americans were peacefully protesting in Birmingham, Alabama, Police Chief Eugene ”Bull” Connor unleashed police dogs and fire hoses on the unarmed demonstrators.
RESULT: The Kennedy Administration was forced to face a difficult truth; the United States could not proclaim itself as a champion of worldwide freedom, while there was institutionalized segregation and open racism toward minorities, especially Blacks, in America. This was the start of major Federal intervention concerning race relations in the U.S.
5) August 28, 1963 – Surely you remember the March on Washington, Rep. King. This is the day that it occurred. Approximately 200,000 left wingers took to the streets of Washington D.C. and listened as Martin Luther King gave his iconic “I Have A Dream “speech. The media was there that day and glorified it.
1964 – A couple of major policy changes, heavily influenced by the left:
Ratification of the 24thAmendment (This abolished the poll tax, which was successful in disenfranchising a majority of black voters in 11 Southern States)
President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law, which prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin.
6) August 1964 – The bodies of 3 civil rights workers who disappeared while investigating the burning of an African American church in Mississippi were found. The police and the Ku Klux Klan worked together to commit the murders.
7) March 7, 1965 – African American protestors attempted to walk from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama to support voting rights in the South. They were stopped at the Edmund Pettis Bridge by police, who used tear gas, whips, cattle prods and clubs to brutally assault the unarmed, non violent marchers. This day came to be known as “Bloody Sunday”.
RESULTS: These incidents helped to convince President Johnson to take further action. In 1965, another major policy change from the left came by way of President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law. This legislation was designed to make it easier for blacks to vote, by eliminating literacy tests and any other illegal actions which would disenfranchise Black voters.
Let us not forget to mention the Vietnam War protests of the 1960’s:
February 1965 – The United States military commenced bombing North Vietnam, at which time on campus antiwar protests spread to mainstream America.
April 1965 – The Students for a Democratic Society, an activist antiwar group, called for a March on Washington to protest the U.S. bombing in North Vietnam. Over 15,000 people responded to the call, which sent the Vietnam antiwar movement into high gear.
October 1967 – A two day march on the Pentagon in Washington resulted in major media coverage, with U.S. Military Police surrounding the building. Take a look at these left wingers in the street that were glorified by the media, along with the anti-American actions taken by these same policy shapers during the Pentagon protest:
Are these the images that you remember, Representative King?
RESULTS: The antiwar protests were not directly responsible for stopping American involvement in the Vietnam War, but helped to turn the tide of public opinion against the war. President Johnson’s mishandling of key components of the war, along with a public backlash, set the stage for the eventual withdrawal of American forces in Vietnam. Yes, the activism of the young men and women on the left had a role in shaping policy during the Vietnam War era.
Well, Rep. King, is this what happens when the left takes to the streets and the media glorifies them. We get social and political change accomplished in our country. When the left took to the streets in the 1960’s, civil rights were reaffirmed in America, along with the withdrawal from a war half a world away, which is still considered a unjust conflict by some to this day. Racism and wars against communism should not have been allowed to happen, but they did.
When a politician speaks in a public forum, allow him/her to keep talking. At some point, something of note is bound to spill out of their mouths. In this case, conclusions can now be drawn based on the babbling of Rep. King.
A. The Republican Party does not wish for the Occupy Wall Street movement to gain any momentum. By calling the members of the movement silly names and being dismissive, will only serve to call more attention to the cause. The left wingers in the streets of America will undermine the contract between wealthy financial wizards and the GOP (and their so called conservative Democrat co-conspirators).
B. The GOP wants President Obama out of the White House yesterday. They are afraid the President will find a way to harness the sprit, drive and determination of the 99 percent movement to carry him and the Democrats to victory in 2012, similar to how the Tea Party helped the GOP with the 2010 midterm elections.
Be afraid, Rep. Peter King. The next job lost in Washington could be yours. When you advocate the stifling of the thoughts and feelings of Americans who are hurting, a backlash will be headed your way. We will see how much longer you will be around Congress shaping policies.
Until next time

I love articles which set the record straight and restore sanity, and you do it so well. Your article is passionate but also clear, factual and intelligent and it cuts right through the bs. A truly satisfying read, thanks. It bothers me when those get elected to office by the by the people go their own way with an agenda that serves special interests. Rep. King has things to answer for, such as his past support of terrorist groups. But his revisionst history lesson is truly appalling. Thank you for your kind words and thanks for reading and commenting.
