Herman Cain Shows No Backbone – Backs Away From Perry Ranch Criticism

The Washington Post and The New York Times have both featured stories about Rick Perry and family leasing a ranch in Texas with a name which incorporated the N word. Herman Cain rightfully went after Perry on "Fox News Sunday". Cain stated,  "There isn't a more vile, negative word than the 'N word' and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted over it, it's just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."

Now here is Cain’s statement the following day: "All I said was the mere fact that that word was there was insensitive. That's not playing the race card. I am not attacking Governor Perry. Some people in the media want to attack him. I'm done with that issue!" That is nothing more than first degree backtracking, within a 24 hour time frame.

Herman Cain appears to have run away from any more criticism of Perry. Why? Is he afraid that he will be called a race baiter? Is he scared that supporters will drop him if he continues to hammer Perry on the race issue? Did he get a call from a high profile person within the Republican Party to cease and desist mentioning the ranch and the N word?

Herman Cain is part of the problem, not part of any solution. There is no way that he can portray himself as a no nonsense leader. If one wishes to lead, there will come a time that he or she must take a stand on a tough or controversial issue. For Cain, the issue of racism, especially within the Republican Party, is front and center. Candidate Perry did not deny the word was at the ranch, his campaign is running a smokescreen statement for him. How can Cain talk about “brainwashed blacks” who won’t vote conservatively, when he is pulling the “head in the sand “routine?  Herman Cain is willing to trade or sell his soul for votes and endorsements from Republicans who simply want the Perry N word issue to go away.

There should be no question as to why African Americans predominately vote on the Democratic line. First, here are the results of a Gallup poll, taken May 1 to 27, 2009:

Blacks who identify themselves as Republican, Democratic or Independent

Republican – 2%

Democratic – 19%

Independent – 6%

The full poll can be found here:  http://www.gallup.com/poll/118937/republican-base-heavily-white-conservative-religious.aspx

Herman Cain should not need a history lesson to realize that after the Civil War, African Americans viewed the Republican Party as the party of emancipation due to Abraham Lincoln, therefore voting along that party line. Democrats were the party of hate in the South, instituting Black Codes and laws that came to be known as “Jim Crow” laws, which were designed to keep blacks in perpetual servitude. It was downhill for Blacks at the end of the Reconstruction period, for the Southern states did their best to return to the Antebellum South, keeping Blacks in “legal” bondage.

African American votes started to swing toward the Democratic Party during FDR’s presidency with the New Deal (which actually wasn’t that great of a deal for blacks). The worm completed its voting turn during the Truman Administration, when Harry Truman received 77 percent of the African American vote in 1948*. After Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, blacks have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats since that time.

Herman, do you need more information as to why Blacks are not brainwashed voters, but vote for the party who they believe will give them the best chance at living a life of equality and opportunity? I didn’t think so. Cain would rather toe the Republican Party line and disparage President Obama than confront racism within his own party. Herman, rethink your brainwashed statement. It takes a man of integrity to stand and fight for equality for all. It is a brainwashed, spineless man who pretends that a racist, offensive word can be easily explained away in a press release.

Rush (Dr. Oxycontin) Limbaugh, as should be expected, accused Cain of playing the race card. A true leader would stand up against the vitriol spewed by this hatemonger. What was candidate Cain’s response? Silence. A true leader would stand against this kind of nonsense and take a position, votes be dammed. Could it be possible that Cain knows that it’s easier to go after Obama than to tell Limbaugh to shut up? Gee Herman, America would like someone to finally show a backbone. This was your chance, and you threw it away. Cain is nothing more than a run of the mill politician. Kiss hands and shake babies to get a vote. Herman Cain is all talk and no backbone.

Winning a couple of straw polls does not mean that you are in line for the Republican Presidential nomination, Herman. If you had a backbone, you would take your message into the African American communities in the United States. Oh, wait. African Americans might be waiting for you to talk about the Republican Party and what they are currently doing in Washington. Instead, you lunch with Donald Trump. Like I said, find a backbone and get back to us when you are ready to fight the Republican Party's dirty little racism secret, not just pander for votes.

Until next time.

Herman Cain doesn't sound like much of a leader to me. Which of course doesn't necessarily mean he won't get to lead. Frightening thought. Good article, I enjoyed reading it, thanks.

Herman Cain looks to be enjoying his frontrunner status. He has now gone so far as to tell the people at the Wall Street protests that "If they're not rich, it's their own fault". Not the words that I want to hear from a person who wants to be the President of the United States. When all is said and done, Cain will not be the Republican nominee. He is part of the rich get richer club. Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for reading and commenting.

Dred, I'm all for your point about bringing blacks into the Republican party. The reason Cain backed off is because it was a hollow pathetic attack that had nothing to do with Perry's disposition toward anyone. Sometimes truth should have a role in politics.

I think Cain backed away because someone in the GOP told him it would be detrimental to his election efforts to continue the criticism. I'm not ready to call Perry a racist, but history shows that a majority of Blacks left the Republican Party in the mid 1960's because the GOP was anti - Civil Rights. The Republican Party has a minority membership problem. Instead of standing on a soapbox and calling a voting bloc a demeaning name, Cain should go into the African American community and explain his positions. If he thinks he can win the presidency without the African American vote, Cain is kidding himself. Dan, thanks for reading and commenting.
