9/11 First Responders Health Bill Is Defeated

Hello everyone,

Today, December 9, 2010, is a day that will live in infamy. The United States Senate defeated a bill which would have helped to provide care for the first responders of the attacks on New York City, which took place on September 11, 2001. The vote was 50 to 47.

This measure lost by 10 votes. That's right, 10 votes. The question is, why? Is it true that members of the Republican Party will block all legislation until the Bush Tax cuts are extended? Including this important piece of legislation?

I challenge all members of Congress to look in the mirror. Look in the mirror and remember what you were doing on September 11, 2001. Where were you when those planes crashed into the World Trade Center buildings? What were you doing when the plane crashed into the Pentagon? Let us not forget the plane that crashed into the field in Pennsylvania. Where were you, members of Congress? Republican, Democrat or Independent, I ask you again, where were you?

Were you being whisked away, at government expense, to a secret bunker where something sinister would not happen to you? Were you cowering under a desk, afraid to come out? Was 9/11/2001 simply the flavor of the month, waving your American flags and singing "God Bless America" on the steps of the Capitol Building? A photo op for you?

Hundreds of brave men and women, from all walks of life, responded to the call for help. Whether the call for help came from Washington D.C. or yes, New York City, many people responded to the call. The response, especially in New York, was done without hesitation. New York City Police and Firefighters ran into the burning buildings, as they were trained to do. After the collapse of the Twin Towers, which came at the cost of thousands of lives, ironworkers, Medical Technicians and many others, sifted through the charred rubble at the site.

Today, greed was allowed to rule. There are U.S. senators today with the future deaths of the First Responders on their hands. Because of tax cuts. Did someone have the gall to say that they were concerned with the cost of the legislation? Someone should wield the baseball bat of reality and smack every single member of the Senate with it. I wish there were a time machine, so that these ungrateful morons could switch places with members of the NYPD and FDNY on that day. Let's hear them talk about tax cuts when they are dying of unspeakable illnesses. Illnesses which doctors are still trying to figure out.

Right now, there is an idiot with the title of Senator somewhere in Washington D.C. trying to figure out how he or she can quickly get home for the holidays. While another first responder is dying somewhere in America, denying their family of a cherished loved one. Politicians make me sick. How dare they refuse aid to the people who did their jobs. Washington, it is time you did your job. Help the first responders NOW. You know where you can stick those tax cuts.

Until next time.

I like your style Judge. After plenty of time to investigate the travesty, I believe it's fair to say the ones that didn't know it was going to happen had their tail feathers planted firmly between their legs and headed as far away from ground zero as they could possibly get. Of course the ones that did, were popping champaign corks as they hurriedly prepared the blueprints for the invasion in Iraq. Can you spell traitor? Nice work.

I wrote this particular piece out of frustration. Since then, a bill has been passed to assist the first responders. It's not perfect, but it's a start. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Haven't got a clue as to what makes our congressional types tick. I just think a clean slate and voting with an informed brain would solve a lot of our problems. How about just a vote even? Come on Americans. Get off your butts, put aside your complacency, grab up your brains and become informed. Then vote - it's free, it's your right and your privilege. No more apathy.

I think too many of the members of Congress have a sense of entitlement. The voters sent them to Washington, and they believe that this is a mandate to do what they want, not the will of the people who sent them there. Maybe some of these pompous buffoons need to leave their climate controlled offices, and walk in the shoes of Americans who are living day to day, wondering if they can pay their bills. Would this wake these politicians out of their slumber? Probably not. Thanks for reading and commenting.
