Rush Limbaugh and Gen. Powell's Obama Endorsement

I know that Limbaugh has many fans out there, bu
t who is he really playing to?

It does not take a long time to figure out that during the Presidential election, he plays to the extreme right of the Republican Party. Let's take the General Colin Powell endorsement of Barack Obama on Sunday, October 19, 2008. General Powell laid out his reasons for the endorsement, some of which are:

1- McCain appearing unsure of how to respond to the financial crisis, everyday there seemed to be a different response.

2- The selection of Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential choice, which raised questions about McCain's judgment.

3- The negative tone the McCain campaign has taken in attacking Obama.

4- The Republican Party moving "too far" to the right.

Like it or not, these are some of the reasons General Powell stated. Now, back to Limbaugh. On his radio show, what did he say? "Let me say it loud and clear, IT WAS TOTALLY ABOUT RACE !". Mr. Limbaugh is not only a radio host, but he has telepathic powers! He can get into General Powell's brain, and tell Powell's true motivations. I clearly heard General Powell say it was not about race. Limbaugh is the worst kind of American, a race - baiting, divisive, fear monger.

Here's a little advice for you, Mr.Limbaugh. McCain didn't get Powell's endorsement, so shut up and get over it. Powell's reasons are out there for everyone to see. You don't have to agree Rush, but to borrow a phrase, you are not squeaky clean. You assign the value of race to this endorsement, in a negative fashion. Let's assign one to you, Rush. How about "Doctor Shopping OxyContin Abuser?". Maybe you should not be on the air right now, with your special brand of negative politics.

Please stop playing to the people who were attending the McCain - Palin rallies. You know Rush, the "terrorist", "traitor", "he's an Arab" crowd. When you go home, and want to shout those things to the top of your lungs, go right ahead. Stop poisoning America with your nonsense, we don't need it. Until next time.

JD, I agree with your point of view on this. There's so much I am happy not to understand. I'm not in favor of treating others like they treat me if it's unpleasant but Limbaugh may have brought it on himself. Good article.

Hi Avis,

Thanks for reading. When one lives in a house made of cards, he or she shouldn't be so eager to turn the fans on. Limbaugh is a person that thrives on making noise. Just don't bring race into the mix. Disgusting. Thanks.

Here, here! I love your defense of the process! Many may think you are for Obama, when actually you are writing as the referee who wants to keep the game clean and focused on issues real and important. The idea of an loud, boisterous fan who screams ephitets (sp) show rightly be tuned out! Here, here!

Hi Walter,

Thank you for reading and commenting. I have mentioned previously, I am disgusted when anyone injects race into the political process. Limbaugh is a master at stirring the pot with the wrong spoon. McCain or Obama should be elected based on platforms and ideas, not because of fear, race, etc. Do I live in Shangri - La? No, but I can dream, can't I? Thanks.

Hi Dred,

Thanks for an interesting article. I have an outsiders perspective (being from Australia). Every time there's an election in the US it seems to be filled with incredible amounts of mud slinging, poisonous barbs and scare mongering. Probably true of all electoral processes, but it just seems the American process is heavily biased towards airtime and sound bites. Good to see some people calling for a bit of real campaigning and fair reporting.

Regards,

Ben.

Hi Ben,

America is the land of print and electronic media, and it is used to the fullest by both sides. The problem is, there is too much negativity being transmitted (See John Kerry, Swift Boat attacks, 2004). Look what America received in return. Four more years of G.W. Bush, and the economic climate we are experiencing. I only want someone that will help us out of the mess. Thanks.

Yes, yes, yes. Limbaugh is not even a conservative, he is actually just an entertainer. I believe in free speech, and would not support any law trying to stifle the rantings of this blow-hole, but I also wish so few people listened in that the free market would silence him. Unfortunately Limbaugh is like a car crash. It is ugly, and violent, and yet almost impossible not to watch. Some people actually believe he is a voice of reason and truth, which means that those who see Limbaugh for what he is need to do a better job of putting out the rational rationale. Thanks for the article. Peace: tex

Hi Tex,

Thanks for reading and commenting. If he's considered a entertainer, I'd rather turn off the radio and listen to the sounds of nature. Limbaugh reminds me of a used car salesman - he will say anything to get you to buy his garbage, no matter how defective. Thanks again.
